Zambrano looks to get back on track vs. Pirates
Sep 8, 2007 - 1:27 PM Chicago Cubs (71-69) at Pittsburgh (62-79) 7:05 pm EDTPITTSBURGH (Ticker) - If Carlos Zambrano hears fans booing on Saturday it means he's doing his job.
Zambrano takes the mound as the Chicago Cubs meet the Pittsburgh Pirates in the middle game of a three-game series.
Zambrano (14-12, 4.35 ERA), who has lost five straight starts, and is 0-3 since signing a five-year, $91.5 million extension, has been upset at being booed by the fans at Wrigley Field.
They have every reason to boo him. The Venezuelan righthander's ERA is 9.56 in those three starts since the hefty extension. On Sunday, he allowed eight runs - seven earned - and seven hits in 4 1/3 innings of an 11-3 loss to the offensively challenged Los Angeles Dodgers, which elicited the boos.
Zambrano could have another long day against the Pirates, as he is 0-4 with a 6.26 ERA in five starts against them this season.
Chicago, which is tied with Milwaukee (71-69) for first place in the National League Central, has lost four of five. St. Louis (69-69) is also in the race, just one game out of first.
Ian Snell (9-11, 4.01) gets the ball for Pittsburgh, which took the opener, 6-1, thanks to seven strong innings from Tom Gorzelanny and three RBI from Jack Wilson. Snell won for just the second time in 11 starts on Sunday, allowing five hits in seven innings of a 11-0 win over St. Louis.
