Burnett looks to maintain dominance over Devil Rays
Sep 8, 2007 - 2:13 PM Toronto (72-68) at Tampa Bay (58-83) 7:10 pm EDTST. PETERSBURG, Florida (Ticker) - Starting to play better away from home, the Toronto Blue Jays look to clinch a series win on Saturday when they continue their three-game set with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.
The Blue Jays, who have won two straight road games, look to win three consecutive contests away from home for just the second time this season and first time since April.
A.J. Burnett (8-7, 3.71 ERA) has had little trouble with Tampa Bay over his career, posting a 6-1 record with a 2.57 ERA in 11 lifetime starts against them, including a 1-0 mark with a 2.63 ERA in two outings this season.
The righthander has been quite sharp since returning from the disabled list on August 12, going 3-1 with a 2.08 ERA in in five starts. In a 6-4 win over the Seattle Mariners on Sunday, he allowed three runs and four hits over seven innings, striking out seven batters.
The Devil Rays counter with Jason Hammel (2-4, 6.95), who will be looking for the first two-game winning streak in his young career. The 25-year-old celebrated his birthday with a win in his last start on Sunday, yielding a run and striking out seven over five frames in an 8-2 triumph over the New York Yankees.
The righthander has only faced the Blue Jays one other time - on August 1 - but did not factor into the decision. Hammel left that start with right shoulder tightness after surrendering two runs over three innings.
