Beckett goes for win No. 18 vs. Orioles
Sep 9, 2007 - 12:55 PM Boston (86-58) at Baltimore (62-80) 1:35 pm EDTBALTIMORE (Ticker) - The Boston Red Sox will turn to ace Josh Beckett when they face the Baltimore Orioles in the finale of a four-game series on Sunday.
The Red Sox had a chance to wrap up the series win on Saturday, but the Orioles pounded Daisuke Matsuzaka for eight runs in just 2 2/3 innings en route to an 11-5 victory. Boston took the first two games of the series.
Beckett (17-6, 3.30 ERA) will be looking to pad his Cy Young resume by becoming the first pitcher in the majors to reach 18 wins this season. Since allowing five earned runs in eight innings against Baltimore on July 31, the 27-year-old righthander is 4-1 over five starts - including a win at Camden Yards on August 11.
Jeremy Guthrie (7-5, 3.65) will take the ball for the Orioles. The 28-year-old righthander has been struggling of late, failing to earn a win since July 27 - a span of seven starts - and compiling a 5.98 ERA over that stretch.
Guthrie was one of the best pitchers in the league through the first four months of the season, going 7-3 with a 2.89 ERA. He has allowed four runs - three earned - in 15 2/3 innings against the Red Sox this season but has not factored in the decision in either of his two starts the division rivals.
Saturday's win snapped a franchise-record-tying 11-game home losing streak for the Orioles and cut the Red Sox lead to 5 1/2 games over the New York Yankees (80-62) in the AL East.
