Red Sox head home to face Devil Rays

Sep 10, 2007 - 2:01 PM Tampa Bay (60-83) at Boston (87-57) 7:05 pm EDT

BOSTON (Ticker) - The Boston Red Sox have the best record in the major leagues due largely to their dominance over the bottom of the American League East.

The Red Sox will look to stay hot when they host the lowly Tampa Bay Devil Rays in the opener of a three-game series on Monday.

Boston is coming off the win of a four-game series over Baltimore which ran its record against the fourth- and fifth-place teams in the division to a combined 22-8. The Red Sox are 9-3 against the last-place Devil Rays.

However, Tampa Bay has been playing like a contender lately, winning its last five series since dropping two of three to Boston from August 20-22. Offense has been the key for the Devil Rays, as they have averaged 7.65 runs per game over that span.

Curt Schilling (8-6, 4.04 ERA) will be charged with stopping the offensive surge. The veteran righthander is 1-1 over his last three starts with a 2.84 ERA.

Tampa Bay will counter with ace Scott Kazmir (11-8, 3.79), who has struggled of late. The 23-year-old lefthander is 2-1 over his last four starts, but has been bailed out by the offense while pitching to a 5.96 ERA.

He has been strong in his career against the Red Sox, owning a 5-4 career mark with a 2.82 ERA in 15 starts. However, Boston pounded Kazmir for six runs and seven hits in 5 2/3 innings on August 20.
