Mulder, Cardinals look to snap three-game skid vs. Reds
Sep 11, 2007 - 1:08 PM St Louis (69-72) at Cincinnati (64-79) 7:10 pm EDTCINCINNATI (Ticker) - If the St. Louis Cardinals are to snap a four-game skid against the Cincinnati Reds, Mark Mulder will have to be a lot better than he was in his first start of the season.
Mulder and the Cardinals open a three-game series with the Reds on Tuesday.
St. Louis was pounded, 12-3, in a makeup game against the National League Central division-leading Chicago Cubs (73-70) on Monday. The Cardinals fell three games behind Chicago and the Milwaukee Brewers (73-70).
The Cardinals will look to get back on track against the Reds, who they have beaten nine times in 12 meetings, including a three-game sweep from August 31-September 2.
Mulder (0-1, 13.50 ERA), who made his first start in over a year following rotator cuff surgery, will look to put an end to St. Louis' pitching woes. St. Louis starters have surrendered 31 runs during the team's three-game skid.
Things did not go well for Mulder on Wednesday, as he allowed six runs and eight hits in four innings of an 8-2 loss to Pittsburgh. The lefthander will look to fare better against a Reds team that has lost nine of their last 13 games.
Matt Belisle (7-8, 5.44), who is unbeaten his last five starts, get the ball for Cincinnati. Belisle is 2-7 with a 6.41 ERA in 14 home starts this season.
