Diamondbacks aim for seventh straight vs. Giants

Sep 11, 2007 - 1:10 PM Arizona (82-63) at San Francisco (65-79) 10:15 pm EDT

SAN FRANCISCO (Ticker) - The Arizona Diamondbacks have one of the best records in the National League because of their ability to win close games.

The first-place Diamondbacks look to extend their major-league best six-game winning streak on Tuesday in the middle game of a three-game series with the lowly San Francisco Giants.

Jeff Salazar hit a go-ahead, pinch-hit, three run homer in the ninth inning as Arizona posted a 5-3 win in the opener. The Diamondbacks, who are a major-league best 32-17 in one-run games, increased their lead over the idle San Diego Padres (77-65) to 3 1/2 games in the NL West.

Edgar Gonzalez (7-2, 5.00 ERA) get the ball for Arizona, which is battling the New York Mets (82-61) for home-field advantage in the playoffs. Gonzalez is making his first start since June 26 after 14 straight appearances out of the bullpen.

San Francisco, which is mired in the the NL West basement, counters with Kevin Correia. Correia (4-6, 3.59) is a converted reliever that has won each of his first three starts.
