Alou, Mets looking to cement NL East crown

FLUSHING, New York (Ticker) -- Moises Alou will hope to continue his hitting streak when the New York Mets host the Atlanta Braves in the finale of a three-game series Wednesday.

In Tuesday's 13-5 loss to the Braves, Alou blasted a solo home run and extended his hitting streak to 16 games. During the second-longest streak of his career, the 41-year-old Alou is batting .383 (23-for-60).

The Mets maintain a six-game advantage over the Philadelphia Phillies (76-68) in the National League East. The Braves sit in third place, 8 1/2 games back.

New York, which has won nine of its last 11, will give John Maine (14-9, 3.80 ERA) the start. Maine is coming off one of his worst outings of the year, surrendering six runs and nine hits and three walks and two strikeouts in a 7-0 setback to the Cincinnati Reds last Wednesday.

On the contrary, Atlanta starter John Smoltz (13-7, 3.02) is coming off an excellent performance, holding the Washington Nationals hitless through seven frames on Friday in a 7-1 triumph.

Mark Teixeira, who smashed a three-run shot on Tuesday, has 12 homers since coming to Atlanta on August 1.
