Red Sox offense takes aim at Jackson, Devil Rays
Sep 12, 2007 - 2:17 PM Tampa Bay (61-84) at Boston (88-58) 7:05 pm EDTBOSTON (Ticker) - The Red Sox looked down and out after losing the series opener on Monday and quickly falling behind by seven runs on Tuesday. But their powerful offense could not stay dormant forever.
The Red Sox will look to build on the 16 runs they put on the board on Tuesday when they conclude their three-game series against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays on Wednesday at Fenway Park.
The Devil Rays had blown leads of 8-2 on a pair of occasions earlier this year, but Boston did one better when it overcame an 8-1 deficit after 3 1/2 innings to claim a 16-10 victory on Tuesday. Mike Lowell had four hits and David Ortiz, J.D. Drew, Jacoby Ellsbury and Dustin Pedroia all homered and Kevin Youkilis hit a bases-loaded triple to take the lead for good in the sixth.
The Devil Rays will turn to Edwin Jackson (4-14, 6.00 ERA) to slow the surge. The 23-year-old righthander seems to be coming back to Earth of late, allowing 14 runs - 13 earned - in a total of nine innings over his past two starts.
Jackson had seemed to turn a corner from mid-July into August, going 3-3 with a 2.34 ERA over seven starts after beginning the season 1-9 with a 7.14 mark.
The Red Sox will counter with Jon Lester (4-0, 4.47). The 23-year-old lefthander had his best start of the season last time out, holding the Baltimore Orioles to four hits in seven scoreless frames to earn his third straight win.
Lester has faced Tampa Bay twice this season, allowing just one run and two hits in a no-decision on August 14 before yielding five runs in 5 1/3 frames in a win on August 21.
- bones shouldn't be this much drama against the devil rays, but I don't ever get tired of watching big papi come through
