Cardinals looking to stay in NL Central race

Sep 13, 2007 - 1:04 PM St Louis (69-74) at Cincinnati (66-79) 12:35 pm EDT

CINCINNATI (Ticker) - The St. Louis Cardinals will hope to avoid the sweep when they square off against the Cincinnati Reds on Thursday in the finale of a three-game series.

For the Cardinals to pick up the much-needed win, starter Adam Wainwright (13-10, 3.75) will need to contain Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips.

The 26-year-old Phillips went 2-for-4 with a solo home run and a stolen base in Wednesday's 5-1 triumph over the Cardinals. Phillips is one home run shy of becoming the fourth middle infielder in major league history to hit 30 homers and steal 30 bases in a season. He would join Alex Rodriguez, Alfonso Soriano and Barry Larkin.

Wainwright, who has won four of his previous five decisions, has relinquished just one hit in 10 at-bats to Phillips in his career. The 26-year-old righthander gave up three runs - two earned - and six hits in a 4-2 loss to the Diamondbacks on Friday.

St. Louis sits in third place of the National League Central, three games behind the Milwaukee Brewers (74-71) and the Chicago Cubs (74-71).

Cincinnati will send righthander Aaron Harang (14-4, 3.64) to the mound. Harang, who has won four of his last five decisions, is second in the NL with 187 strikeouts.
