Cubs look to clinch series and keep pace in the NL Central
Sep 13, 2007 - 1:24 PM Chicago Cubs (74-71) at Houston (63-82) 8:05 pm EDTHOUSTON (Ticker) - The Chicago Cubs look to keep pace in the National League Central when they visit the Houston Astros in the finale of a three-game series on Thursday.
After dropping the series opener on Tuesday, the Cubs came back to earn a 3-2 victory on Wednesday behind seven solid innings from lefthander Rich Hill. The win pushed Chicago back into a tie with the Milwaukee Brewers (74-71) for first place in the division. The St. Louis Cardinals (69-74) fell four games back.
The Cubs turn to struggling veteran Steve Trachsel (6-10, 4.78 ERA). Since being acquired from Baltimore on August 31, Trachsel has lost both of his starts with Chicago.
Trachsel was knocked out of a start against Pittsburgh last Sunday after just two innings, allowing six runs and six hits. The long-time National Leaguer is 7-7 with a 4.80 ERA in 17 career starts against the Astros.
Houston will counter with its own veteran righthander in Woody Williams (8-14, 4.93). The 41-year-old Houston native is 0-2 over his last three starts after running off an impressive stretch of four starts in which he went 3-0 with a 2.05 ERA.
He allowed one run and four hits in five innings against the Cubs in a no decision on September 2, and owns a 4-9 record with a 4.15 ERA in 20 games - 19 starts - against them in his career.
