Weaver and fading Mariners face Devil Rays
Sep 13, 2007 - 1:47 PM Tampa Bay (61-85) at Seattle (76-68) 10:05 pm EDTSEATTLE (Ticker) - The Seattle Mariners late season swoon may have cost them a chance at their first playoff appearance since 2001.
Jeff Weaver and the Mariners open a four-game series with the last-place Tampa Bay Devil Rays on Thursday.
Seattle has lost 15 of its last 18 games to fall 6 1/2 games behind the New York Yankees (83-62) in the American League wild card race with 19 games to play.
Yuniesky Betancourt hit a walk-off single in the ninth inning helped the Mariners earn a 6-5 win and salvage the final game of a three-game series with the Oakland Athletics on Wednesday. Seattle has not won two straight since August 23-24.
Weaver (6-12, 6.05 ERA) will have his hands full with a Tampa Bay squad that has been playing like it is the team in a playoff race. The righthander was pounded for six earned runs and nine hits in five innings of a 12-6 loss to Detroit on Saturday, and is winless in his last three starts.
The Devil Rays have won 13 of 19, but are coming off a disappointing loss to Boston after David Ortiz hit a walk-off homer in a 5-4 win on Wednesday.
Jason Hammel (2-4, 6.57) takes the mound for Tampa Bay, which has lost seven of the eight meetings here. Hammel has just one win in his last 10 starts, and allowed two runs and five hits in six innings, but did not factor into the decision in a 5-4 win over Toronto on Saturday.
