Brewers look to keep pace in NL Central race
Sep 14, 2007 - 1:55 PM Cincinnati (67-79) at Milwaukee (74-71), 8:05 pm EDTMILWAUKEE (Ticker) -- The Milwaukee Brewers look to keep pace in the National League Central when they open a three-game series against the Cincinnati Reds on Friday.
Milwaukee trails the division-leading Chicago Cubs (75-71) by one-half game.
The Brewers are 7-4 in September and hope to take advantage of Miller Park, where they play 10 their final 17 games and are a NL-best 45-26.
Milwaukee will turn to Ben Sheets (12-4, 3.54 ERA), who makes his second consecutive start against the Reds. The righthander has fared very well against the Reds, owning a 7-3 record with a 2.69 ERA against them in 14 outings.
Sheets overcame five runs and six hits over six frames in a 10-5 win over Cincinnati on Sunday. With the win, Sheets improved to 2-0 in three starts after missing more than a month due to a sprained finger on his pitching hand.
His counterpart will be 30-year-old rookie Tom Shearn (2-0, 4.19), who will make his fourth career start. He relieved an ineffective Phil Dumatrait in Sunday's game against Milwaukee, surrendering three runs and four hits over two innings.
