Carmona, Indians look to stay hot at home vs. Royals
Sep 15, 2007 - 12:57 PM Kansas City (63-83) at Cleveland (86-61) 7:05 pm EDTCLEVELAND (Ticker) - The Cleveland Indians are on the verge of their first American League Central crown in six years. A big reason for that is they are the only team in the majors with three 15-game winners.
Fausto Carmona is one of them, and he takes the mound on Saturday as the Indians continue their three-game series with the Kansas City Royals.
Casey Blake hit a walk-off homer in the ninth as Cleveland posted a 5-4 win on Friday for its 16th win in its last 20 games here.
Carmona (16-8, 3.20 ERA) has excelled in his first season as a starter, and joins C.C. Sabathia and Paul Byrd as the only trio in the league with at least 15 wins. The righthanded sinkerballer has allowed two runs or less in 12 of his last 14 starts, and is 2-0 with a 3.12 ERA in four starts against Kansas City this season.
Cleveland, which leads the Detroit Tigers (81-67) by 5 1/2 games in the AL Central, has beaten Kansas City in 16 of the last 20 meetings here.
Zack Greinke (6-5, 3.99) takes the mound for the Royals, who have lost eight of nine. Greinke was roughed up for three runs and six hits in 3 2/3 innings, but did not receive a decision in a 6-3 loss to New York on Sunday.
