Thome takes second shot at homer No. 500

CHICAGO (Ticker) - Jim Thome hopes to join a very exclusive club when the Chicago White Sox continue their three-game set against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim on Saturday.

Thome went 0-for-4 in the White Sox's 5-3 victory over the Angels in the series opener. His next home run will make him only the 23rd player in major league history to reach 500 home runs.

Jered Weaver (11-7, 4.00 ERA), who has never faced Thome, will be asked to keep his bat quiet at least one more day. The righthander has faced the White Sox just once in his career, yielding just six hits over 5 2/3 innings in a 3-0 win on April 28.

Weaver saw his three-start winning streak snapped with his poor outing on Sunday when he surrendered six runs and nine hits over five innings against Cleveland.

His opponent on the mound will be Jon Garland (9-11, 4.59), who has not fared well against the Angels over his career. The righthander is 3-7 with a 4.86 ERA in 13 lifetime starts.

Garland took the 5-2 loss against the Twins on Sunday when he allowed five runs - one earned - over eight frames. He needs to win at least one more game to reach double-digit victories for the sixth consecutive season.
