Braves looking to keep playoff hopes alive

Sep 15, 2007 - 2:30 PM Atlanta (75-72) at Washington (65-82) 7:05 pm EDT

WASHINGTON (Ticker) - The Atlanta Braves will try to keep their slim playoff hopes alive when the club visits the Washington Nationals for the second game of a three-game series Saturday.

After winning 14 consecutive division titles from 1991-2005, the Braves are dangerously close to missing the postseason for the second straight year.

Atlanta's chance at the National League East crown is virtually over, trailing the division-leading New York Mets (83-63) by 8 1/2 games with just 15 to play.

The Braves' wild card hopes are not looking so bright either. The club will need to close a 4 1/2-game gap on the San Diego Padres (79-67) while jumping over four teams.

For this must-win contest, Atlanta will turn to righthander Lance Cormier (2-5, 6.60 ERA), who has won two of his previous three starts after starting the 2007 campaign with an 0-4 record. The 27-year-old Cormier surrendered four runs and seven hits in six innings of Sunday's 7-4 setback to the Nationals.

Washington, which has lost three straight, will send Jason Bergmann (4-5, 4.31) to the mound. The 24-year-old righthander has not lost since June 30, spanning seven starts.
