Fielder, Brewers continue quest to end postseason drought
Sep 15, 2007 - 2:34 PM Cincinnati (68-79) at Milwaukee (74-72) 7:05 pm EDTMILWAUKEE (Ticker) - Prince Fielder and the Milwaukee Brewers continue their push for the franchise's first playoff appearance in 25 years on Saturday in the middle game of a three-game series with the Cincinnati Reds.
Fielder tied the franchise record with his 45th home run on Friday, but ace Ben Sheets was roughed up for four first-inning runs in a 6-5 loss.
A prime candidate for the National League MVP, Fielder has six homers in September and is doing his best to help the Brewers reach the postseason for the first time since they won the American League East in 1982.
Milwaukee, which has the second-best home record in the NL at 45-27, trails the Chicago Cubs (74-72) by 1 1/2 games in the NL Central.
Jeff Suppan (9-11, 4.74 ERA) was signed in the offseason for this time of the year. The righthander won a World Series with the St. Louis Cardinals last season and has big game experience. However, he has just one win in his last 10 starts.
Meanwhile, Cincinnati has won four straight and is looking to play the spoiler.
Kirk Saarloos (1-4, 7.39) makes a spot start for the Reds in place of struggling rookie Phil Dumatrait. Saarloos, who has not started since May 27, was recalled from Class AAA Louisville on September 4.
