Mariners, Devil Rays close out four-game series

Sep 16, 2007 - 1:55 PM Tampa Bay (62-87) at Seattle (78-69) 4:05 pm EDT

SEATTLE (Ticker) - The Seattle Mariners are watching their postseason hopes slip away. They will try to get back on the winning track when they close out a four-game series against the visiting Tampa Bay Devil Rays on Sunday.

The Mariners had won three straight games in their last at-bat before running into Devil Rays' ace Scott Kazmir on Saturday. The 23-year-old lefthander struck out 11 in six innings to keep Seattle five games behind the New York Yankees (84-64) in the American League wild card race.

The Devil Rays are just two games behind the Baltimore Orioles (63-84) for fourth place in the American League East. They have finished out of the cellar just once in their 10-year history.

The Mariners will send lefthander Jarrod Washburn (9-14, 4.49 ERA) to the mound Sunday. The veteran is just 1-7 over his last eight starts with a 5.55 ERA, but he owns a 10-2 career record with a 2.53 ERA in 14 starts against Tampa Bay.

The Devil Rays will counter with rookie Andy Sonnanstine (5-9, 5.96). The 24-year-old righthander had a three-start winning streak snapped last Tuesday when the Red Sox pounded him for five runs and eight hits in 3 1/3 innings.
