Brewers hanging on in tight NL Central race
Sep 16, 2007 - 2:17 PM Cincinnati (68-80) at Milwaukee (75-72) 2:05 pm EDTMILWAUKEE (Ticker) - The Milwaukee Brewers host the Cincinnati Reds on Sunday looking to clinch a three-game series and keep pace with the Chicago Cubs in the National League Central.
The Brewers picked up a 5-3 victory on Saturday as Jeff Suppan pitched 6 1/3 strong innings and Prince Fielder hit his franchise-record 46th homer of the season.
Milwaukee picked up a half game in the division race when the Cubs (77-72) split a doubleheader with the St. Louis Cardinals on Saturday. After Sunday's series finale, the Brewers embark on a seven-game road trip to Houston and Atlanta before finishing the season at home with three games against St. Louis and four against San Diego.
Carlos Villanueva (7-4, 4.42 ERA) will get the start for Milwaukee. The 23-year-old righthander has served mostly as the long man out of the bullpen this season, but moved to the rotation on September 4.
In two starts, Villanueva has allowed three runs in 11 total innings. In 16 1/3 career frames vs. the Reds, he has allowed six runs and 16 hits, striking out 15.
The Reds will counter with righthander Matt Belisle (8-8, 5.31). The 27-year-old has won his last three decisions, but lasted just 3 2/3 frames in a loss to the Brewers on July 24.
