Cubs look to extend Central lead at Cardinals
Sep 16, 2007 - 2:21 PM Chicago Cubs (77-72) at St Louis (70-77) 2:15 pm EDTST. LOUIS (Ticker) - The Chicago Cubs are leading the National League Central, but the Milwaukee Brewers are just a game behind.
The Cubs will look to re-establish a cushion when they finish up a four-game series at the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday.
The two teams split a doubleheader on Saturday, with the Cardinals winning the nightcap to snap a season-long, nine-game losing streak. St. Louis was on the cusp of the division race before the skid, but now sit six games back, seven games under .500.
The Brewers (75-72) gained a one-half game in the division with a win on Saturday, putting pressure on Chicago to stay ahead. After Sunday, the Cubs have six games at home before finishing with six on the road, all against sub-.500 teams.
Jason Marquis (11-8, 4.17 ERA) will start for Chicago against his former team. The 29-year-old righthander was left off the playoff roster in St. Louis last season, but has been solid for the Cubs, allowing three earned runs or less in 20 of his 30 outings.
St. Louis will counter with Mark Mulder (0-2, 12.38), who will be making his third start since returning from shoulder surgery. The veteran lefthander has allowed 13 earned runs in eight innings this season.
