Dodgers aim to complete sweep of Diamondbacks

Sep 16, 2007 - 2:35 PM Arizona (83-66) at LA Dodgers (79-69) 4:10 pm EDT

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) - The Los Angeles Dodgers certainly wanted a weekend sweep of the National League West-leading Diamondbacks. On Sunday, they will get a chance to do just that as the divisional rivals conclude their three-game series.

Derek Lowe tossed seven solid innings and Rafael Furcal became the first Dodger in over 33 years to steal four bases in a single game as Los Angeles downed Arizona, 6-2, on Saturday.

It was the Dodgers' fourth straight win, helping them move to within 3 1/2 games of the NL West-leading Diamondbacks. They also trail NL wild card leader San Diego by 1 1/2 games.

Los Angeles will turn to Esteban Loaiza (2-1, 4.32 ERA) to complete the sweep. He will need to bounce back from his poor outing on Tuesday in which he surrendered six runs and six hits over 3 1/3 innings in a 9-4 loss to the Padres.

The righthander will be searching for his first career win against Arizona. In six appearances, including five starts, he is 0-2 with a 5.10 ERA.

Loaiza's opponent on the mound will be fellow Mexican righthander Edgar Gonzalez (7-2, 4.76), who will be making just his second start after spending the last two-plus months in the bullpen. He did not factor into the decision in his latest outing - a 2-1 loss against the San Francisco Giants - despite yielding one run and three hits over six innings.

The righthander has struggled in four lifetime starts and one relief appearance vs. the Dodgers, going 0-3 with a 10.18 ERA. Loaiza and Gonzalez are just two of 13 current major league pitchers who hail from Mexico.
