Wakefield, Red Sox visit Blue Jays
Sep 17, 2007 - 2:14 PM Boston (90-60) at Toronto (74-75) 7:07 pm EDTTORONTO (Ticker) -- Tim Wakefield will look to get back on track when the Boston Red Sox visit the Toronto Blue Jays on Monday.
Wakefield (16-10, 4.68 ERA), who earned a decision in each of his first 26 starts this season, missed a turn in the rotation with back soreness at the end of August and has not been the same since.
The veteran knuckleballer, who was riding a 22-inning scoreless streak at the time of the injury, has allowed 13 runs in 6 2/3 total innings in two starts since his return, failing to factor in the decision in either game.
However, Wakefield has been strong against the Blue Jays in his career, owning a 15-9 record with a 3.80 ERA in 44 games - 34 starts - against the division rivals.
Wakefield will be attempting to give the Red Sox an emotional lift after a crushing 4-3 defeat on Sunday against the arch-rival New York Yankees (85-64) which cut their lead in the division to 4 1/2 games with 12 to play.
The Blue Jays will counter with Dustin McGowan (10-9, 4.01). The 25-year-old righthander suffered a loss in his last start despite allowing just three hits in five innings to the Yankees.
McGowan had gone 10 straight starts without allowing more than three earned runs before last Wednesday.
