Lackey pursues win No. 17 against Devil Rays

ANAHEIM, California (Ticker) - John Lackey would like nothing more than to continue helping the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim secure a berth in the postseason. On Tuesday, he'll get his chance against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

With their magic number of five and a 8 1/2-game lead over second-place Seattle (79-70) in the American League West, the Angels are the closest of all the division leaders in the majors to clinching a spot in the playoffs.

John Lackey (16-9, 3.21 ERA) will be searching for his first win in four outings. He will try to become the seventh AL pitcher to win 17 games against a team he has dominated over his career.

On Thursday, the righthander allowed three runs and nine hits over seven frames - striking out eight - in a 3-0 loss to the Orioles. In nine career starts, he is 7-1 with a 2.51 ERA.

Jason Hammel (2-4, 6.13), who will be facing Anaheim for the first time in his career, will be looking to extend his unbeaten streak to five games. Despite a 2.12 ERA over his last three games, the righthander is just 1-0.

Hammel is coming off a no-decision on Thursday in a 8-7 loss to Seattle in which he yielded one run and five hits over six innings.
