Struggling Weaver, Mariners face Athletics

OAKLAND, California (Ticker) - Jeff Weaver ended 2006 on a high note by winning the clinching game of the World Series for the St. Louis Cardinals. Right now he is just hoping to finish 2007 still in the Seattle Mariners' starting rotation.

Weaver will take the mound for the Mariners on Tuesday in the second of a three-game series against the Oakland Athletics at McAfee Coliseum.

The 31-year-old righthander (6-12, 6.34 ERA) has gone winless in his last four starts and given up 22 runs in 13 2/3 innings. Weaver gave up five runs in just 1 1/3 innings in his last start on Thursday against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

The Mariners meanwhile have also struggled, losing 17 of their last 23 contests, falling from the lead in the American League wild card race to 6 1/2 games behind the New York Yankees (86-64).

Oakland will send Chad Gaudin (11-11, 4.47) to hill for the Athletics. The righthander is coming off a victory against the Texas Rangers on Thursday, giving up three runs in six innings while striking out eight.

Seattle defeated Oakland, 4-0, in the series opener Monday behind 6 1/3 strong innings from Miguel Batista.
