Teixeira, Braves look for sweep against Marlins
Sep 19, 2007 - 2:13 PM Florida (65-86) at Atlanta (78-73) 7:35 pm EDTATLANTA (Ticker) - The Atlanta Braves are virtually out of the playoff picture but they are still playing hard.
Mark Teixeira hopes he can help propel the Braves to their fourth straight win on Wednesday when the club wraps up a three-game series with the Florida Marlins on Wednesday.
Teixeira, a midseason acquisition from the Texas Rangers, can hardly be blamed for the team's inability to make a serious run at the New York Mets for the National League East crown. The 27-year-old first baseman has homered 12 times since joining the Braves on August 1.
Teixeira went 2-for-4 in the Braves' 4-3 triumph over the Marlins on Tuesday to extend his hitting streak to 11 games. The switch-hitting slugger is batting .311 with 25 homers and 92 RBI this season.
Florida will turn to Dontrelle Willis (9-15, 5.34 ERA) to shut down Teixeira and the Braves' offense. The 25-year-old lefthander has lost 12 of his previous 14 decisions but did register the win in his last outing, yielding five runs and seven hits and four walks over six innings in a 7-6 victory over the Colorado Rockies on Friday.
He will be opposed by lefthander Chuck James (10-10, 4.30), who has just one win since the end of July. James lasted just three innings in his last start, giving up three runs and six hits in Friday's 8-5 win over the Washington Nationals.
The Marlins have lost their last three games.
