Phillies look to continue streak towards playoffs

ST. LOUIS (Ticker) - The Philadelphia Phillies will attempt to continue their longest winning streak of the season and entertaining surge towards the playoffs when they take on the St. Louis Cardinals in the final game of a three-game series on Wednesday.

Philadelphia is coming off a 7-4 win in 14 innings on Tuesday, where it overcame the loss of a blown save by Brett Myers in the ninth.

With the latest wild win, the Phillies have cut lead of the New York Mets (83-67) in the National League East to just 1 1/2 games, moving the closest they have been since losing their opening day game of the season on April 2.

Philadelphia is also just 1 1/2 games behind the San Diego Padres (83-67) in the wild card.

Jamie Moyer (13-11, 5.12 ERA) will take the hill for the Phillies, who have won 16 of their last 20 games in St. Louis. The 44-year-old lefthander is 4-1 in his career at the Cardinals with a 2.56 ERA in nine starts.

St. Louis will counter with Adam Wainwright (13-11, 3.71) on the mound. Wainwright has lost his last two starts but is 2-0 against Philadelphia this season, giving up two runs in 13 innings pitched.

The Cardinals have lost six of the first eight games against the Phillies this season, and has only won once in their last 13 games overall.
