Angels look to move closer to AL West title

ANAHEIM, California (Ticker) -- The Seattle Mariners looked like serious contenders less than a month ago. A lot can change in a month.

The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim will look to move closer to locking up the American League West when they host the Mariners in the opener of a four-game series on Thursday.

At the end of the day on August 24, Seattle had won seven of eight to pull within one game of the Angels in the division. Since then, the Mariners have won just eight of 25 to fall 8 1/2 games back with just 11 games to play.

Los Angeles' magic number stands at three, making a division-clinching celebration a likelihood during the series this weekend.

The Angels now have their sights set on the best record in baseball. Anaheim is currently tied with the Cleveland Indians (90-62), one-half game ahead of the Boston Red Sox (90-63).

Jered Weaver (12-7, 3.90 ERA) will get the start for the Angels, looking for his fifth win in his last six outings. The 24-year-old righthander picked up a win at Chicago last Saturday, and held Seattle to two runs - one earned - in eight innings to earn a win on August 29.

The Mariners will try to fight off elimination with rookie Ryan Feierabend (1-4, 6.80). The 22-year-old lefthander will be making his return to the rotation in place of fellow lefthander Horacio Ramirez, who failed to record an out in his last start.
