Angels look to clinch division vs. Mariners
Sep 22, 2007 - 12:59 PM Seattle (82-71) at LA Angels (91-63) 3:55 pm EDTANAHEIM, California (Ticker) - The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim get another chance to lock up the American League West Division title on Saturday when they face the Seattle Mariners in the third game of a four-game series.
After taking the series opener on Thursday, 9-5, the Angels failed to clinch the division on Friday, when former Angel Jarrod Washburn led the Mariners to a 6-0 victory.
The magic number is only one for Anaheim, which is also in a race for the best record in the AL with the Cleveland Indians (91-62) and the Boston Red Sox (91-63).
The Angels will send Bartolo Colon (6-7, 6.68 ERA) to the mound, hoping the righthander can show some sort of the form he had in 2005, when he won the AL Cy Young award. Colon has not won since June 14, and returned from the disabled list on September 14. The righthander, who was battling elbow irritation earlier this season, was scratched from his start on Wednesday with back stiffness.
Colon is 12-9 in 25 career starts against the Mariners, but lost the only time he faced Seattle this season. Colon gave up nine runs in 6 1/3 innings on May 28.
Seattle will send Miguel Batista (14-11, 4.51) to the mound. The veteran righthander is 2-2 against the Angels this year in four starts. He pitched 6 1/3 scoreless innings against Oakland in his last start on Monday.
