Mets look to build on momentum against Marlins
Sep 22, 2007 - 1:21 PM NY Mets (85-68) at Florida (66-88) 3:55 pm EDTMIAMI (Ticker) - The New York Mets will be looking to build on the momentum they may have gotten thanks to the Florida Marlins' shaky defense.
The struggling Mets scored eight unearned runs due to a franchise record six Florida errors as they took game two of a four-game series, 9-6, on Friday.
New York, which led the Philadelphia Phillies by seven games in the NL East on September 12, have won just two of its past eight games. The Mets now currently hold a 1 1/2-game lead on the Phillies (84-70), who have won eight of their past nine.
The Mets are still without All-Star closer Billy Wagner, who is sidelined with back spasms . New York may also be without center fielder Carlos Beltran, who left Friday's game in the fifth inning with a bruised patellar tendon in his left knee. His status is day-to-day.
Oliver Perez (14-9, 3.43 ERA) will take the hill for the Mets on Saturday. The lefthander left after 4 2/3 innings with a no-decision on Sunday in a 10-6 loss to the Phillies after permitting five runs - two earned - and six hits with six walks.
Perez is 2-2 with a 5.14 ERA in eight career outings against the Marlins.
The Marlins will counter with Byung-Hyun Kim (9-7, 6.06). On Monday, the righthander surrendered nine runs and nine hits over just four innings in an 11-6 loss to Atlanta. Kim is 1-4 with a 5.34 ERA lifetime against the Mets.
