RHP Verlander goes for his 18th win

DETROIT (Ticker) - Justin Verlander aims to keep alive the Detroit Tigers' slim playoff hopes in Sunday's finale against the Kansas City Royals.

Detroit is on the verge of being eliminated from postseason consideration, trailing the New York Yankees (89-65) by 5 1/2 games in the American League wild card race. New York can clinch at least a tie of the wild card with a win and Tigers loss.

The Tigers have just seven game remaining in the regular season, while the Yankees have eight left.

Verlander (17-6, 3.70 ERA) will try to set a personal record for wins. Last time out, the 24-year-old had his five-game winning streak stopped after giving up seven runs in 5 2/3 innings in a setback at Cleveland on Tuesday.

The righthander is 5-0 with a 2.17 ERA in seven lifetime starts against the Royals.

Kansas City's Jorge De La Rosa (8-11, 5.40) takes the hill with the hopes of getting his first road victory since June 27. The lefthander allowed one run in three innings out of the bullpen on Wednesday.

The 26-year-old De La Rosa is making his first start since spending a stint on the disabled list with an injured elbow.
