Tigers make last effort for playoffs
Sep 24, 2007 - 2:25 PM Minnesota (76-79) at Detroit (85-71) 7:05 pm EDTDETROIT (Ticker) - Magglio Ordonez and the Detroit Tigers will make their last stand to get into the playoffs when they open a three-game series with the Minnesota Twins on Monday.
The Tigers are on the verge of elimination. Any combination of two Detroit losses or two wins by the New York Yankees (90-65) will keep the Tigers out of the postseason.
Ordonez, who sat out Sunday's 7-2 win against the Kansas City Royals with a sore right heel, will continue his quest for the American League batting title against the Twins.
Ordonez, 33, is hitting .358 for the season and holds an eight-point lead over Ichiro Suzuki of the Seattle Mariners, who is hitting .350.
Nate Robertson (8-12, 4.94) will try to keep the Tigers in the playoff picture when he takes the mound on Monday.
Robertson gave up four runs and six hits over seven innings during his last start on Wednesday. The 30-year-old lefthander struck out five and walked three as Detroit suffered a 4-2 setback to the Cleveland Indians.
The Twins will counter with Carlos Silva (12-14, 4.40), who allowed just two runs and seven hits in six innings to pick up the win in a 4-2 win over the Texas Rangers on Tuesday.
