Tigers aim to bounce back vs. Twins

DETROIT (Ticker) -- The Detroit Tigers likely will not have a chance to defend their American League crown. But they are not finished quite yet.

The Tigers aim to avoid elimination from the postseason when they host the Minnesota Twins on Tuesday.

Detroit is 5 1/2 games behind the New York Yankees (90-66) in the American League wild card chase with five games remaining in the regular season.

The Tigers lost a 2-0 decision to the Twins in Monday's series opener, dropping the Yankees' magic number to one.

Yorman Bazardo (1-1, 3.24 ERA) takes the mound for the Tigers, who will be eliminated from postseason contention with one more loss or a win by the Yankees. In his last outing, Bazardo allowed two runs in 4 2/3 innings of a no-decision at Minnesota 10 days ago.

The Twins counter with Matt Garza (4-6, 3.72), who is winless in three lifetime starts against the Tigers. On September 14, the righthander gave up four runs in 5 2/3 frames but not figure in the decision.

Garza yielded two runs and six hits with five strikeouts over 6 1/3 frames to defeat the Texas Rangers in his last start Wednesday.
