Streaking Cubs look to increase NL Central lead

Sep 25, 2007 - 2:11 PM Chicago Cubs (83-73) at Florida (66-90) 7:05 pm EDT

MIAMI (Ticker) - The first-place Chicago Cubs will be looking for their fifth straight win when they take on the Florida Marlins in the first game of a three-game series on Tuesday.

The Cubs, who have won 10 of their past 12 games, lead the Milwaukee Brewers (80-76) by three games in the National League Central with just six games to play.

Chicago, which is aiming for their first postseason appearance since 2003, has a magic number of four.

Ted Lilly (15-7, 3.78 ERA) takes the mound for Chicago. Lilly has not lost since August 25, and with a victory can set a new personal career high for wins in a season. The lefthander is coming off a no-decision on Wednesday in which he allowed two runs in seven innings with eight strikeouts against Cincinnati. However, Lilly has gone 0-3 with a 5.16 ERA in four career starts against the Marlins.

While Lilly has had a stellar season, his opposition, Dontrelle Willis is having a year to forget. Willis (9-15, 5.32) is suffering through the worst season of his five-year career. The lefthander has just two wins in his last 21 starts, just two years removed from winning 22 games in 2005. The 25-year-old allowed three runs in six innings in a no-decision against the Mets on Thursday. Willis is 3-3 in eight career starts against the Cubs.

The Marlins have lost seven of their last eight games, but swept the Cubs in a three-game series at Chicago from May 28-30.
