Fielder and Brewers look to stay in playoff hunt

MILWAUKEE (Ticker) - Prince Fielder is doing his best to keep to the Milwaukee Brewers in the National League Central Division race.

Fielder and the Brewers aim for a three-game sweep of the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday.

A National League MVP candidate, Fielder hit a pair of home runs in the Brewers' 9-1 win on Tuesday, and in the process became the youngest player in history to hit 50 home runs. The 23-year-old has three homers and seven RBI in the first two games of the series.

Milwaukee,which has won 10 of its last 13 here, moved to within two games of the Chicago Cubs (83-74) for first place in the NL Central.

Carlos Villanueva (8-4, 3.97 ERA) takes the mound for the Brewers, who play their final five games here. Villanueva is 2-1 with a 1.50 ERA in four starts since rejoining the rotation on September 4.

Villanueva is 2-0 with a 2.25 ERA lifetime against St. Louis. As for the Cardinals, they have lost 16 of 19 and are mired in an 11-game road losing streak.

Brad Thompson (7-6, 4.96) hopes to put an end to the Cardinals' longest road losing streak since 1978. The righthander allowed one run and four hits in six innings of a 7-4 win over Houston on Saturday.
