Astros, Reds finish up three-game set
Sep 27, 2007 - 12:58 PM Houston (70-88) at Cincinnati (71-87), 7:10 pm EDTCINCINNATI (Ticker) -- The Houston Astros and the Cincinnati Reds are playing out the string in what has been a disappointing season for both clubs. They will finish up a three-game series at Great American Ballpark on Thursday.
The Astros won the first two games of the series behind the bat of slugger Lance Berkman, who is 6-for-9 with two homers and five RBI in the series.
Cincinnati's Brandon Phillips homered in the first inning on Wednesday to become just the second second baseman in history to hit 30 homers and steal 30 bases in the same season. Alfonso Soriano accomplished the feat in 2002, 2003 and 2005.
The Reds will be without slugger Adam Dunn, who opted for season-ending surgery on a torn meniscus in his right knee on Wednesday.
Dunn, who could become a free agent should Cincinnati decline a $13 million option on his contract, became the first player in team history to club 40 homers in four consecutive seasons with a blast on September 19.
Houston will send lefthander Wandy Rodriguez (9-13, 4.66 ERA) to the mound on Thursday. The 28-year-old has been awful on the road this season - going 3-10 with a 6.69 ERA - but he earned a win at St. Louis last Thursday, allowing one run and seven hits in eight frames.
The Reds will counter with Matt Belisle (8-9, 5.43). The 27-year-old righthander had one of his best starts of the season at Houston on May 29, surrendering one run and four hits in 7 2/3 innings to earn a win.
