Rookie Broadway, White Sox dominate Royals
Sep 28, 2007 - 3:44 AM By Rob Czajkowskyj PA Sportsticker Contributing WriterCHICAGO (Ticker) -- Rookie Lance Broadway pitched six scoreless innings to pick up his first major league win and Paul Konerko belted a three-run homer as the Chicago White Sox cruised to a 10-0 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Thursday.
Broadway (1-1) allowed two hits and two walks with eight strikeouts before being relieved after tossing 97 pitches.
The rookie righthander's first major league start ended well as Broadway was able to retire the final eight batters he faced. Broadway has surrendered just one run over 10 1/3 innings with 14 strikeouts to just five walks in his limited big league experience.
"This kid is impressive on the mound," White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen said. "He's laid back and makes pitches. When you're a rookie pitcher and you throw sliders and changeups behind in the count, you have confidence."
"I thought I was good," Broadway said. "I mainly threw a cutter that I just learned. It was the only pitch that I was really throwing for strikes on a consistent basis. Over all I was very pleased with it."
The 24-year-old Broadway, who pitched effectively all night, also received some offensive support.
Paul Konerko's three-run blast off Royals rookie Billy Buckner in the first inning was all the support Broadway needed. After Josh Fields singled and Jim Thome walked, Konerko sent Buckner's first-pitch offering into the left-center field seats to give the White Sox an early 3-0 lead.
The home run marked Konerko's fourth consecutive season of 30-plus home runs.
The Royals had an opportunity in the second inning but Broadway struck out the final three batters of the inning after allowing the first two batters to reach base.
"Bad game. (We) gave up runs early. We didn't swing the bats," Royals manager Buddy Bell said.
Scott Podsednik hit a leadoff double in the second inning and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Danny Richar to extend the White Sox's lead to 4-0.
Juan Uribe, who had two hits, belted an RBI double to left-center and later scored on shortstop Jason Smith's throwing error to open up a 6-0 Chicago advantage.
Buckner (1-2), who was making just his fifth major league start, lasted six innings, yielding six runs and seven hits with two walks and four strikeouts while allowing six runs.
Kansas City has now lost four of its last five contests.
