Lilly, Cubs aim to even NLDS vs. Diamondbacks
Oct 4, 2007 - 2:20 PM Chicago Cubs at Arizona 10:07 pm EDT National League Division Series Game TwoPHOENIX (Ticker) -- The Arizona Diamondbacks showcased their pitching staff in Game One. Now it's up to the Chicago Cubs to return the favor.
The Cubs will aim to bounce back against the Diamondbacks in Game Two of their National League Division Series on Thursday.
In Wednesday's series opener, rookie Mark Reynolds hit the go-ahead home run in the seventh inning and reigning NL Cy Young Award winner Brandon Webb pitched seven strong innings in a 3-1 triumph.
"It is always nice to get the first one," Arizona manager Bob Melvin said. "You have your ace on the mound. You expect to win that game, especially at home. It's a game that there was probably a little more pressure on us to win than them.
"Very exciting, the most exciting game I've pitched so far (in my career)," Webb said. "I kept them off-balance and guys played great defense behind me. ... I had to grind it out. I gave up a leadoff double a couple of times and just had to bare down."
Righthander Brandon Lyon tossed a perfect eighth and closer Jose Valverde worked around a two-out walk to log the save for Arizona, which limited Chicago to just four hits.
Chicago's Ted Lilly looks to take the spotlight from Arizona's rotation as he goes to the mound with the hopes of tying the series. He is coming off his second consecutive 15-win campaign - 15-8 with a 3.83 ERA in 34 starts - but has struggled when facing the Diamondbacks.
Lilly is 0-2 with a 3.38 ERA in four career appearance against Arizona, which got a two-run homer from Connor Jackson to beat the lefthander here on August 25.
"One of our goals was to get to the postseason, and we've done that, and now it's time to just lay it all out there and get after it," Lilly said.
Doug Davis gets the call for the Diamondbacks. The 32-year-old has been one of the major contributors to the team's drive to the postseason, going 8-2 in 15 starts following the All-Star break. However, Davis was winless in his last four outings in the regular season.
Despite his recent woes, the southpaw struck out eight batters in seven frames to defeat Lilly and the Cubs on August 25. Davis is 7-5 with a 3.39 ERA in 13 lifetime starts vs. Chicago.
If the Cubs hope to avoid falling behind 0-2, it needs Alfonso Soriano, Derrek Lee and Aramis Ramirez to forget their dismal 1-for-9 combined performance in the opener.
The series will shift to the Windy City on Saturday for Game Three with Rich Hill taking the hill for the Cubs, while the Diamondbacks counter with Livan Hernandez.
