Nationals place OF Goodwin on DL

Aug 16, 2017 - 5:18 PM The Washington Nationals placed outfielder Brian Goodwin on the 10-day disabled list Wednesday with a left groin strain.

Goodwin left Sunday's first game of a doubleheader against the San Francisco Giants with tightness in his groin after stealing a base in the eighth inning. The move is retroactive to Aug. 14.

The 26-year-old Goodwin joins a list of Nationals outfielders currently sidelined with injuries -- Bryce Harper (hyperextended knee), Ryan Raburn (trapezius strain), Jayson Werth (foot contusion) and Adam Eaton (torn ACL).

Goodwin is hitting .251 this season with 13 home runs, 30 RBIs, 23 walks, six stolen bases and 41 runs scored. Appearing at all three outfield positions, Goodwin is also tied for second among all National League rookies (tied for third in the majors) in doubles with 21.

In a corresponding move, the Nationals called up outfielder Alejandro De Aza from Triple-A Syracuse.

De Aza, 33, joins the Nationals for his first major league assignment of the season. The Nationals become his sixth MLB team over parts of nine seasons.

Signed as a minor league free agent on June 14, De Aza is batting .280 with four home runs and 19 RBIs in 56 games at Triple-A.

A career .261 hitter who has extensive experience at all three outfield spots, De Aza spent the 2016 season with the New York Mets and was a non-roster invitee to the Oakland Athletics' 2017 spring training.

Additionally, the Nationals transferred shortstop Trea Turner on the 60-day disabled list.

Turner, 24, has been on the DL since June 30 with a right wrist fracture. Prior to the injury, he was hitting .279 with seven homers, 32 RBIs and 35 stolen bases in 68 games.
