Diamondbacks RHP De La Rosa needs second Tommy John surgery

Aug 17, 2017 - 8:39 PM Arizona Diamondbacks right-hander Rubby De La Rosa will undergo a second Tommy John surgery, manager Torey Lovullo announced prior to Thursday's afternoon game against the Houston Astros.

De La Rosa will need the surgery to repair the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow.

The 28-year-old had his initial surgery performed in 2011 near the tail end of his rookie season with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Lovullo said the date of the upcoming surgery has yet to be disclosed, but doesn't expect De La Rosa to return next season.

De La Rosa posted an 0-1 mark with a 4.70 ERA in nine appearances (7 2/3 innings) with the Diamondbacks this season. In his last outing on Aug. 1, he allowed a homer and struck out two in one inning of a 16-4 loss to the Chicago Cubs.
