Mariners activate OF Haniger, place Dyson on DL

Aug 20, 2017 - 12:25 AM The Seattle Mariners activated outfielder Mitch Haniger from the disabled list Saturday and placed outfielder Jarrod Dyson on the 10-day DL with a right groin strain.

In addition, the Mariners recalled right-hander Casey Lawrence from Tacoma and optioned right-hander Sam Gaviglio to the Triple-A club.

The moves were announced prior to Saturday's road game against the Tampa Bay Rays at Tropicana Field. Haniger and Lawrence will be in uniform and available

Haniger, 26, was placed on the 10-day disabled list on July 30 after being struck in the face by a pitch in the second inning on July 29. He began a rehabilitation assignment at Triple-A on Aug. 12. In six games with Tacoma, he hit .190 (4-for-21) with two home runs and four RBIs.

In 57 games with the Mariners this season, Haniger is batting .255 with seven home runs and 24 RBIs. He was placed on the 10-day disabled list earlier this season on April 26 with a strained right oblique, missing 42 games before being activated from the DL on June 11.

Dyson, 33, is hitting .255 with five home runs, 30 RBIs and 28 stolen bases in 109 games with Seattle this season. The DL move is retroactive to Aug. 17.

Dyson has 14 defensive runs saved this season, the fourth-most in the majors. In parts of eight seasons with the Kansas City Royals (2010-16) and Mariners (2017), he is hitting .259 with 12 homers, 131 RBIs and 204 stolen bases in 659 career games. He was acquired from the Royals on Jan. 6.

Lawrence, 29, is appearing in his fourth stint with the Mariners this season. In 13 relief appearances with Seattle, he is 1-0 with a 5.64 ERA over 30 1/3 innings with 34 strikeouts and five walks. In 11 games (seven starts) with Tacoma, he is 2-4 with a 4.08 ERA.

Gaviglio, 27, was recalled from Tacoma on Aug. 15 but did not appear with the Mariners during that span. In 12 games (11 starts) over three stints with Seattle this season, he is 3-5 with a 4.62 ERA. He is 3-5 with a 3.70 ERA in 10 starts at Triple-A.
