Pirates shut down Cervelli (quad) for season
Sep 19, 2017 - 12:29 AM Pittsburgh Pirates catcher Francisco Cervelli will not play again this season. He sustained a left quadriceps injury in late August and is not likely to recover in time to play during the regular season.
With the Pirates out of the running for a playoff berth (14 games behind the second National League wild-card team through Sunday's games), it did not make sense to rush him back. As a result, the Pirates are shutting him down.
"The reality is we've run out of time," manager Clint Hurdle said.
Cervelli, 31, ends his season with a .249 average, five home runs and 31 RBIs in 81 games and 304 plate appearances. He is under contract through 2019 and will earn $10.5 million next season.
Cervelli hit .301 in 49 games in 2014 and batted .295 with seven homers in 130 games in 2015.
