Report: Jeter asks Marlins to fire four luminaries

Sep 23, 2017 - 3:35 AM Derek Jeter, who is the prospective owner of the Miami Marlins, asked outgoing team president David Samson to fire four people who serve as special assistants, the Miami Herald reported Friday night.

According to the newspaper, Jeter asked Samson to dismiss Hall of Famers Andre Dawson and Tony Perez, 2003 World Series-winning manager Jack McKeon along with former outfielder Jeff Conine.

The Herald reported that Jeter told Samson to make the firings because the former New York Yankees captain did not want to do it.

Dawson has held his position as a special assistant since 2000 while Perez has been in his role since the team's inaugural season in 1993. Conine took a special assistant job in 2008 after retiring as a player.

McKeon led the Marlins to their second title against Jeter's Yankees, winning Game 6 at Yankee Stadium. McKeon became a special assistant in 2005 and in recent years, his responsibilities included scouting Miami's minor league players.

"Sure I'm sad," McKeon told the Herald. "No question you're sad. I'm disappointed but you understand. A new regime is coming in and they want their new people in there. You can't fault them with that."

Jeter is part of an ownership group along with venture capitalist Bruce Sherman that purchased the Marlins from Jeffrey Loria, who has owned the team since 2002. Major League Baseball is hoping to hold a special meeting in November to vote on the sale and 75 percent of owners must approve the transaction.
