Dodgers' Puig benched for arriving late

Sep 26, 2017 - 1:02 AM LOS ANGELES -- Dodgers right fielder Yasiel Puig was benched for Los Angeles' game against the San Diego Padres on Monday after reporting late to an on-field pregame assignment.

It was the second consecutive game for which Puig was benched by manager Dave Roberts, who sat him Sunday after Puig was thrown out stealing without sliding to end the Saturday game, a 2-1 loss to the San Francisco Giants.

Roberts said the slide, which Puig attempted on his own, was just one of several issues he has had with the outfielder's behavior of late.

"He was supposed to be on the field, and when you show up late there are consequences," Roberts said. "It has to be clear in the clubhouse that it's about finishing strong as a team. No one player is bigger than the team. We talk a lot about accountability."

Puig was sent to the minors last season as the Dodgers attempted to shake his lapses in discipline. This season, he is hitting .259 with a career-high 26 home runs and 70 RBIs.
