Dodgers look to make it two straight over Giants
Apr 1, 2008 - 2:10 PM San Francisco (0-1) at LA Dodgers (1-0) 10:10 pm EDTLOS ANGELES (Ticker) - The Los Angeles Dodgers will try to make it two straight to open the season when they host the rival San Francisco Giants on Tuesday.
The Dodgers took the season opener in convincing fashion on Monday, posting a 5-0 victory as Brad Penny allowed just four hits in 6 2/3 innings. Three relievers combined to finish off the shutout.
A Giants lineup that does not include Barry Bonds for the first time since 1992 failed to muster even one extra-base hit.
Jeff Kent turned 40 in March and celebrated the start of his 19th season with a two-run blast off San Francisco starter Barry Zito.
Derek Lowe will take the mound for Los Angeles on Sunday. The veteran sinkerballer posted a 12-14 record with a 3.88 ERA in 2007 and has had mixed success against the Giants in his career, matching a 3-5 record with a respectable 3.41 ERA.
San Francisco will counter with hard-throwing youngster Matt Cain. The 23-year-old righthander finished 7-16 last season despite a 3.63 ERA and 163 strikeouts.
Cain got some of the worst run support in the majors last season, failing to earn a win in eight separate starts in which he allowed two earned runs or less.
