A day later, defending NL champion Rockies open season at Cardinals
Apr 1, 2008 - 2:17 PM Colorado (0-0) at St Louis (0-0) 8:15 pm EDTST. LOUIS (Ticker) - After weather postponed the contest on Opening Day, the Colorado Rockies open their defense of their National League title on Tuesday when they visit the St. Louis Cardinals.
The matchup will feature Kip Wells on the mound for Colorado and Kyle Lohse for St. Louis.
Monday's starters Jeff Francis of Colorado and Adam Wainwright of St. Louis went into the third inning on Monday before the game was called off due to rain.
The Cardinals had scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning and had a 5-1 lead in the third when the umpires stopped play due to rain. After approximately 90 minutes, the contest was called.
Colorado is looking to recapture the magic of last season when they went 14-1 to end the year, which included a dramatic, 13th-inning 9-8 victory over San Diego in the wild-card tiebreaker.
The Rockies then swept Philadelphia and Arizona to reach their first World Series, where they were swept by the Boston Red Sox.
Wells, who is beginning his first season with Colorado, went just 7-17 for the Cardinals last season with a 5.70 ERA.
The righthander will be opposed by Lohse, who is beginning his first campaign with St. Louis.
The 29-year-old started last season with Cincinnati before being traded to Philadelphia, and posted a 9-12 record with a 4.63 ERA between the two teams. Lohse went 0-1 in two starts with a 4.50 ERA against the Rockies last season.
