Lester, Harden square off again as Red Sox visit A's
Apr 2, 2008 - 12:30 PM Boston (2-1) at Oakland (1-2) 3:35 pm EDTOAKLAND, California (Ticker) - If Rich Harden's second start is anything like his first, the Oakland Athletics have a good chance to even their record.
Harden (1-0) will be looking to build on his nine-strikeout debut in Japan when the Athletics host the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday.
The Canadian righthander, who appeared in a combined 16 games in 2006 and 2007 due to a number of injuries, dominated the Red Sox last week at the Tokyo Dome. Harden allowed one run and three hits in six innings while walking three to pick up the win.
A popular name in trade talks this winter as Oakland begins to rebuild, Harden was 10-5 with a 2.53 ERA in 2005 before he began to break down.
While the clubs split two games in their season-opening series in Japan, Boston took the first game of their American-soil debut, 2-1, on Tuesday.
Daisuke Matsuzaka struck out nine in 6 2/3 solid frames and Kevin Youkilis had three hits to lead the Red Sox.
Jon Lester (0-1) will take the mound for Boston on Wednesday. The 24-year-old lefthander opposed Harden in Japan as well, allowing four runs and five hits in four innings to take the loss.
