Mussina, Yankees look to make it two straight

BRONX, New York (Ticker) - If the New york Yankees hope to extend their streak of playoff appearances to 14, Mike Mussina will need to shake off the worst season of his career.

Mussina will begin the process on Wednesday when the Yankees host the Toronto Blue Jays.

The veteran righthander posted a career-worst 5.15 ERA in 2007, managing just an 11-10 record and getting pulled out of the rotation by then-manager Joe Torre near the end of the season.

The 39-year-old no longer works in the mid-90s with his fastball, instead relying on control and movement with pitch speeds topping out in the mid-80s.

The Opening Day game on Tuesday went about as well as New York could have hoped, as Chien-Ming Wang went seven strong innings and Joba Chamberlain and Mariano Rivera each tossed a scoreless frame in a 3-2 win.

Alex Rodriguez led the offense with a pair of hits and an RBI while Melky Cabrera homered in the victory.

The Blue Jays will look to avoid consecutive losses with righthander A.J. Burnett.

The injury-plagued starter is one of the more dangerous pitchers in the league when healthy, finishing fourth in the American League with 9.56 strikeouts per nine innings.

Burnett made 25 starts last season, going 10-8 with a 3.75 ERA.
