Silva, Mariners look to take rubber game

Apr 2, 2008 - 1:01 PM Texas (1-1) at Seattle (1-1) 10:10 pm EDT

SEATTLE (Ticker) - Carlos Silva makes his Seattle Mariners debut when the club hosts the Texas Rangers in the rubber game of a three-game series Wednesday.

The Mariners made a pair of big changes to their rotation over the winter and if Silva's debut is anything like Erik Bedard's on Monday, the front office will be very satisfied.

Seattle spent $48 million on a four-year deal with Silva, who tossed 202 innings for the Minnesota Twins last season, posting a 13-14 record with a 4.19 ERA.

Bedard, acquired from Baltimore in the offseason, tossed five solid innings in Monday's season opener, allowing one run while striking out five.

A burly sinkerballer, Silva will be trying to pick the Mariners up after a tough loss on Tuesday, when Josh Hamilton blasted a two-run homer off All-Star closer J.J. Putz in the top of the ninth inning to hand Texas a 5-4 win.

The Rangers will unveil a new member of their rotation on Wednesday as well, as Jason Jennings makes his debut. The righthander had an injury-plagued season in Houston in 2007 and signed with Texas in the offseason.

He will be attempting to return to the form that saw him post a 3.78 ERA for Colorado in 2006.
