Despite battle with cancer, Davis takes the mound

CINCINNATI (Ticker) - Even after being diagnosed with thyroid cancer last week, Doug Davis wants to help the Arizona Diamondbacks as much as he can.

Davis will make his first start of the season for the Diamondbacks as they try to take the rubber game of a three-game series with the Cincinnati Reds on Thursday.

Davis is schedule to undergo surgery on April 10, but plans to remain in the rotation until that time. The lefthander is expected to be sidelined for 4-6 weeks.

He will be trying to derail the momentum Cincinnati gained with a 6-5 comeback victory on Wednesday.

The Reds trailed by two runs heading into the bottom of the ninth, but new closer Brandon Lyon surrendered three straight hits, including a walk-off, three-run home run to Edwin Encarnacion.

Cincinnati will turn to 22-year-old rookie Johnny Cueto, who will be making his major league debut.

Despite a rough spring, the highly-touted righthander made a name for himself at three minor league stops in 2007, going a combined 12-9 with a 3.07 ERA with 170 strikeouts over 161 1/3 innings.

Those numbers helped him claim his second Minor League Pitcher of the Year Award with the Reds.
