Jones, Sherill face former team for first time
Apr 4, 2008 - 12:13 PM Seattle (2-1) at Baltimore (1-1) 7:05 pm EDTBALTIMORE (Ticker) - Seattle Mariners ace Erik Bedard figures to take the mound later this weekend against Baltimore.
However, the players the Orioles received in return for him may not wait that long to haunt their former team.
The Baltimore Orioles, with outfielder Adam Jones and closer George Sherrill playing prominent roles for them, will host the first of a three-game set against the Mariners on Friday.
Bedard - acquired from the Orioles for Jones, Sherrill and three minor league pitchers on February 8 in a six-player deal - was solid in his Opening Day start on Monday and is scheduled to take the mound against his ex-team on Sunday.
Meanwhile, Jones had two hits and a RBI while Sherrill picked up his first save in Baltimore's 9-6 victory over Tampa Bay on Wednesday - the Orioles' most recent game due to Thursday's rainout.
Jones is batting .286 (2-for-7) through two games.
On Friday, Jones will be facing Jarrod Washburn, who went 10-15 with a 4.32 ERA last season. In four career starts at Camden Yards, the lefthander is 3-0 with a 3.08 ERA.
Washburn will be following in the footsteps of Carlos Silva, who pitched seven strong innings in Seattle's 4-1 win over Texas on Thursday. Jose Lopez and Jose Vidro each homered in the victory.
The Orioles will counter with Thursday's scheduled starter, Steve Trachsel.
The righthander, who went 7-11 with a 4.90 ERA with the Orioles and Chicago Cubs last season, will make his first start for Baltimore after being traded by the club to the Chicago Cubs in August.
