Red Sox go for third straight win

Apr 4, 2008 - 12:23 PM Boston (3-1) at Toronto (1-2) 7:15 pm EDT

TORONTO (Ticker) - After their season-opening four-game series took eight days to complete, the Boston Red Sox will likely enjoy a return to normalcy.

On Friday, the Red Sox open a three-game weekend set with the Toronto Blue Jays.

Boston split its first two games against Oakland at the Tokyo Dome in Japan on March 25-26.

Upon their return to the United States in Oakland, the Red Sox took their final two games against the Athletics, including a 5-0 victory on Wednesday.

David Ortiz got his first two hits of the season - including a home run - while three Boston pitchers held Oakland to just five hits in the club's first shutout of the season.

The Red Sox will turn to veteran knuckleballer Tim Wakefield, who will make his first start of the season. The 41-year-old righthander went 17-12 last season with a 4.76 ERA.

Toronto, which lost two one-run games in its season-opening series with the New York Yankees, will send Shaun Marcum to the mound.

The righthander, who went 12-6 with a 4.13 ERA in 2007, collected wins in 11 of his final decisions after earning a spot in the starting rotation in May.

Marcum was 1-0 with a 4.09 ERA in two starts against the Red Sox in 2007 - both Blue Jays' wins.
